During millennia, in Africa, the ancestral habits most often shaped by centuries of observation and tests showed a perfect knowledge of the nature and the desire of our ancestors to respect at best its balance like the sacred forests true sanctuaries for plants and animals where it was banned any human activity except for religious rites.
Unfortunately the introduction of market economy by colonization had from the 19th century reversed the situation.
There ensued for traditional African societies profound changes in their lifestyle.
- Livestock and the routine fishing of subsistence made place to industrial agriculture more selective and using revolutionary processes of exploitations unfortunately frustrating important natural behaviors of animals such as nest building, sun bathing, dust bathing etc...
- Areas of savannas lost of their importance to the profit of the coastal areas of forest and sophisticated hunting with the marketing of its products has seriously compromised the natural balance between the taking out of animal resources and their renewal. The decline of the populations of African elephants as a result of the ivory trade is well known.
Many solutions have been proposed to improve the situation. However it appears that without a collective awakening, a real mobilization of all actors concerned by the plight of African animals. These specific actions of protection will be only provisional and alternative solutions.
It is therefore to grow the awareness of the children, citizens of tomorrow, to transmit them the key to better understand the world of animals and the stakes of their protection and encouraging them to become fully responsible citizens and actors of their environment, that the MAEP has chosen to expand its humane education campaigns by privileging the place of learning by excellence: The school.
Beyond the learning of exemplary gestures towards animals, it is primarily to provide teachers and pupils a true space of exchange on the relationship between human and animals and open the debate and the reflection around the topic of animal welfare in Africa and particularly in Côte d'Ivoire.
